GENSAN TUNA FESTIVAL: Tuna Capital Center of the Festival

A colorful, vibrant, and dazzling tribute to the ocean’s bounty will once again welcome General Santos City this first week of September.

The entire city celebrates the annual Tuna Festival to honor the thriving fishing industry, the abundant marine bounty, and the unique dedication of local fishermen. With grand street parades, spectacular street dancing, and creative tuna cooking competitions, the region’s cultural and economic vitality is reviving.

From Simple Beginnings to Grand Celebration

The historic festival began in 1998 as part of Gensan’s 30th Charter Anniversary. It was first held as a simple initiative by the local tourism association that featured culinary exhibits. Due to its success, it has now grown into a full-fledged and grand annual celebration that is now visited by tourists from all over the country and the world.

The Heart of Industry

There is no denying why the city of the Generals is nicknamed the "Tuna Capital of the Philippines." The center of this bounty is the famous Gensan Fish Port Complex in Barangay Tambler, where tons of fresh tuna are unloaded daily to supply the local and global markets.

In recognition of this symbol, a giant image of tuna bravely greets travelers at the intersection of South Cotabato - Sarangani Road and the road to the fish port—a testament that tuna is not just a simple product, but the very soul and identity of General Santos.
