EDITORIAL | Public Preaching: Holiness or Nuisance?

Individuals who preach the Word of God with all their might are a common sight on trains and other public transportation. While they intend to spread the good news, it is inevitable that for other passengers, this is a major inconvenience to travel. There are times when guards even intervene to maintain peace. In the midst of such a situation, where exactly is the right place to draw the line?

The Philippines is a country rich in diverse beliefs. Although the majority is Roman Catholic, our Protestant brothers and sisters are also active, particularly Pentecostal and Evangelical groups who often preach in public. Our law recognizes freedom of religion. However, this right must also lead to respect for the comfortable and quiet travel of fellow citizens.

If you are a passenger who encounters this situation, there are ways to avoid tension:

Use earphones: Wearing a headset or earplugs can help block out noise, whether you are listening to something or not.

Divert attention: If you are in open areas such as plazas, you can simply walk past them or ignore them.

Avoid arguments: Avoid confrontation to avoid the chaos that can arise from religious differences.

In this age of modern technology, there are more effective ways to express your faith. Social media is a vast platform for free preaching—as long as it is done with respect and without trampling on other beliefs. Ultimately, true holiness is not measured only by the loudness of your voice in public, but by consideration for the peace of others.
