PUBLIC ADVISORY: CRITICAL SNAKE SEASON ALERT

The Risk: Why are encounters increasing?

Local authorities, including the DENR and MDRRMO, have warned that sightings of venomous species like the King Cobra are peaking. Two major factors are at play:

Breeding Season (January–April): During these months, King Cobras are searching for mates, making them significantly more mobile and territorial/aggressive than usual.

Extreme Heat: As temperatures soar, cold-blooded snakes are forced out of their natural habitats to find water and cooler shelters, often ending up in gardens, garages, or under houses.

How to Snake-Proof Your Home

Snakes enter residential areas primarily for food (rodents) and shelter.

Eliminate Food Sources: Keep your home rodent-free. Store pet food in sealed containers and manage garbage properly, as rats are a primary food source that "attracts" snakes.
Remove Hiding Spots: Regularly trim tall grass and dense shrubs. Clear piles of wood, rocks, or construction debris where snakes may nest.
Seal Entry Points: Use door sweeps or stoppers to close gaps under doors. Inspect drainage pipes, windows, and wall cracks for openings.
Check Before Use: Shake out shoes/boots before putting them on and check bedding before lying down, as cobras have been known to hide in cool, dark spots indoors.

Outdoor & Night Safety

Visibility is Key: Always use a bright flashlight (torch) when walking in dark areas or through gardens at night.
Protective Gear: Wear closed-toe shoes or boots and long pants when working in fields or forested areas.
Stay Calm: If you encounter a snake, do not panic or run. Move away slowly and maintain a distance of at least six feet.

Emergency Response & First Aid

DO NOT attempt to catch, handle, or kill the snake. Most bites occur when people try to kill or capture the animal. Under Republic Act 9147, harming wildlife without authority is also punishable by law.

In Case of a Bite:

Stay Calm: Keep the victim still to slow the spread of venom.
Immobilize: Keep the affected limb below heart level.
Remove Restrictions: Take off rings, watches, or tight clothing near the bite site.
Seek Medical Help Immediately: Rush to the nearest hospital for anti-venom.
Note: Polyvalent anti-venom (effective against King Cobras and Philippine Cobras) is available at major facilities like Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC).
