VISITA IGLESIA
You visit 7 or 14 different churches near your area during Lenten? No Problem. But how? What's Behind the Tradition?
Origins
Visita Iglesia, or the Seven Churches Visitation, is a Catholic tradition that involves visiting seven different churches on Maundy Thursday to pray before the Blessed Sacrament at the Altar of Repose. The practice is believed to have originated in early Christian Rome, where pilgrims visited the seven major basilicas (such as St. Peter's and St. Paul's) as a form of penance. In the mid-16th century (around 1553), St. Philip Neri popularized the "Seven Churches Walk" in Rome. He organized these pilgrimages as a spiritual alternative to the rowdy celebrations of the Roman Carnival. Augustinian missionaries brought the tradition to the Philippines in the 1560s. Over centuries, it became a cornerstone of Filipino Lenten devotion.
Tradition
Visita Iglesia is a popular Roman Catholic Lenten tradition in the Philippines where devotees visit at least seven different churches to pray and reflect on the Passion of Christ. Traditionally observed on Maundy Thursday after the Mass of the Last Supper, it is a form of panata (sacred vow) and penance.
While seven is the standard—symbolizing the seven holy sites Jesus visited from his arrest to his crucifixion—some devotees visit 14 churches to match each Station of the Cross. Most pilgrims recite the Stations of the Cross, typically praying two stations per church if visiting seven, or one per church if visiting 14. On Maundy Thursday, the main focus is the Monumento or Altar of Repose, where the Blessed Sacrament is kept for adoration until midnight. While many travel by car or jeepney, some participate in Bisikleta Iglesia (pilgrimage by bicycle) or walk barefoot as an additional act of sacrifice.
Symbolic and Meanings
The number seven is often linked to the Seven Last Words of Jesus or the seven places Jesus was brought to during his Passion (e.g., from the Garden of Gethsemane to the house of Annas, then to Caiaphas, etc.). In modern Filipino practice, devotees often recite the 14 Stations of the Cross, usually praying two stations at each of the seven churches. It serves as a way for the faithful to reflect on Christ’s suffering and seek penance for their sins.
