RAMADAN'S PRE-DAWN AND POST-DUSK MEAL TRADITION

Introduction

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims observe a daily fast (Sawm) from dawn until sunset. This tradition is anchored by two primary meals: Suhur and Iftar

Pre-Dawn

Eaten in the early morning hours, specifically before the break of dawn (Fajr). It is intended to nourish and hydrate the body for the upcoming 11–16 hours of fasting. While technically optional, it is considered a highly meritorious practice (Sunnah) and a source of spiritual blessing (Barakah). Typically includes slow-digesting complex carbohydrates (oats, whole wheat), proteins (eggs, yogurt), and plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

Post-Dusk

Consumed immediately at sunset, precisely at the time of the fourth daily prayer (Maghrib). Many follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad by breaking the fast first with an odd number of dates and water or milk before the main meal. It is often a communal, festive affair where families, friends, and even entire communities gather for large dinners or "Iftar parties".

Cultural Variations

In the Philippines, dishes like Arroz Caldo (rice porridge) are popular. Beyond sustenance, these meals are part of a broader spiritual journey emphasizing self-restraint, empathy for the less fortunate, and increased devotion.
