LENTEN PROCESSIONS
Lenten processions are solemn religious parades held during Lent, particularly during Holy Week, to commemorate the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These "prayers in motion" serve as public manifestations of faith and are central to Catholic traditions worldwide.
Notable Locations
Baliwag, Bulacan is known for hosting the longest Lenten procession in the Philippines. A historic Lenten tradition involves the Pope leading a procession on Ash Wednesday to the Basilica of Santa Sabina at Vatican. Bantayan Island in Cebu is renowned for its grand Good Friday procession, featuring over 30 to 40 intricate heirloom carrozas (carriages) holding life-sized religious images. The famous procession of the Black Nazarene occurs on Good Friday, where thousands of male devotees carry the miraculous icon through narrow streets.
Features and Traditions
Carrozas and Pasos are elaborate floats decorated with flowers, lights, and intricate vestments. They typically feature biblical characters like the 12 apostles, Mary of Bethany, and the Virgin Mary (often as the Virgen Dolorosa). Via Crucis or Way of the Cross, many processions re-enact the 14 stations of Jesus’ journey to Calvary. Salubong is a joyful Easter Sunday dawn procession where the images of the Risen Christ and the Mourning Mary meet, signaling the end of the Lenten sorrow.
