Introduction

The Senakulo (also spelled Cenaculo) is a traditional Filipino dramatization of the life, passion, and death of Jesus Christ, performed annually during Holy Week. Derived from the Spanish word cenáculo (meaning "upper room"), it refers to the site of the Last Supper.

Format

It is a communal religious play, often staged in town plazas, church grounds, or even through city streets. Performances can range from a single evening to a week-long series of events. While focusing on the Passion of Christ, many versions include scenes from his birth and early ministry, ending with the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Performers, known as senakulistas, are typically local volunteers—tricycle drivers, students, and housewives—who treat their roles as a panata (religious vow).

Differ Style

Characterized by slow, rhythmic chanting of the Pasyon text. Incorporates realistic acting, contemporary costumes, and sometimes professional stage effects or musical numbers.  In some provinces like Pampanga, the Senakulo includes actual crucifixions and self-flagellation as acts of penance, attracting thousands of tourists.

Notable Locations

Cainta, Rizal, home to one of the oldest and most elaborate Senakulo traditions, where residents perform in period-accurate Roman costumes. San Pedro Cutud, Pampanga is famous for its graphic reenactments, where devotees are nailed to wooden crosses. Bulacan & Marinduque are known for integrating local folk elements, such as the Moriones Festival in Marinduque which focuses on the story of the centurion Longinus.
