ALELUIA AND GLORIA OMITTED

Introduction

In Western Christian traditions like Catholicism, Lutheranism, and Anglicanism, the word "Alleluia" (Hebrew for "Praise the Lord") is omitted from the liturgy during the 40 days of Lent to reflect the season's penitential and somber character. This "liturgical fast" creates a stark contrast between the desert journey of Lent and the triumphant joy of Easter.

Why?

Lent is a time of repentance, mourning for sins, and spiritual purification. The joyful, angelic nature of the Alleluia is considered inconsistent with this focus. Just as the faithful fast from food, the Church "fasts" from its most joyful expression. Silencing the word for 40 days builds spiritual longing, making its return at the Easter Vigil more powerful and celebratory. During Mass, the Alleluia is typically replaced by a Gospel Acclamation or "Verse before the Gospel". Common alternatives found in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) include: "Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!", "Praise and honor to you, Lord Jesus Christ!", "Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory!"

Tradition

An ancient custom where the word "Alleluia" is symbolically buried or "put away" on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday (Shrove Sunday). The Gloria in Excelsis is also generally omitted during Lenten Sundays to maintain the somber atmosphere, though it may be sung on major solemnities like the Feast of St. Joseph. In many Eastern Orthodox traditions, the Alleluia is actually used more frequently during Lent, as it is seen as a call to prayer rather than solely an expression of joy.
