Introduction

Aside the authorship, there are many preserved or discovered manuscripts as a foundation of vernacular translations of the bible.

Preservation

Bible manuscripts are handwritten copies of portions of the biblical text that provide crucial evidence for understanding the history and transmission of the Bible. There are thousands of surviving manuscripts, ranging from small fragments of papyrus to complete codices (book form) made of parchment.

In the Old Testament side, the Dead Sea Scrolls are the oldest extant biblical manuscripts and provide the earliest evidence for the biblical text. All books of the Hebrew Bible except Nehemiah and Esther have been found among the scrolls. The most complete is the Great Isaiah Scroll. Most are now housed at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

The Aleppo Codex is considered the most accurate manuscript of the Masoretic text (the authoritative Hebrew text), this codex was completed in the 10th century CE by the scribe Solomon ben Buya'a and vocalized by Aaron ben Asher. It is the basis for many modern Hebrew Bibles and is currently held by the Israel Museum. The Leningrad Codex is the oldest complete Hebrew manuscript of the entire Old Testament, dating to around 1008 CE. It is located at the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg and has been used as the source for several modern critical editions of the Hebrew Bible.

The Old Testament was primarily written in Hebrew (with some Aramaic portions) and was meticulously maintained by Jewish scribal traditions, these include Talmudic/Scribal Standards and The Masoretes.

Papyrus to Codex

The earliest known New Testament manuscript fragment is the Papyrus 52, dated to approximately 125 CE. It contains a portion of the Gospel of John and is located in the John Rylands Library in Manchester, UK. Codex Vaticanus is the one of the earliest and most complete manuscripts of the Greek Bible (Old and New Testaments), dated to the mid-4th century. It has been in the Vatican Library since at least 1475. Along with Vaticanus, Codex Sinaiticus is one of the most important manuscripts of the Greek Old and New Testaments, also dated to the mid-4th century. It is the earliest complete Greek New Testament and most of it is housed in the British Library in London.

Codex Alexandrinus, A 5th-century codex containing most of the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament) and the New Testament. It resides in the British Library. The New Testament was written in Greek and spread rapidly through an "uncontrolled" but prolific copying process by early Christian communities. With over 5,800 Greek manuscripts and 20,000+ versions in other ancient languages (Latin, Syriac, Coptic), the New Testament has more manuscript support than any other work of antiquity.

Aramaic

Bible Aramaic manuscripts primarily consist of the Aramaic portions of the Old Testament and early translations like the Targums and the Syriac Peshitta. The Peshitta is the standard Syriac(major dialect of Aramaic used in early Christian literature and Bible translations) translation for the Church of the East.

Khabouris Manuscript, an 11th-century (possibly 10th-century) complete New Testament codex and Rabbula Gospels, a 6th-century illuminated Gospel book. The Old Syriac Versions are Sinaitic Palimpsest (Syrs), a 4th-century manuscript found at Saint Catherine's Monastery containing the four Gospels and Curetonian Gospels (Syrc), a 5th-century manuscript fragments.

Other Significant Aramaic Manuscripts are, Genesis Apocryphon (1QapGen)( A 1st-century BCE Dead Sea Scroll that provides an expanded Aramaic retelling of Genesis), Aramaic Levi Document (1Q21)(A Hasmonean-era fragment found at Qumran), and Crawford Aramaic New Testament (A notable manuscript of the Peshitta tradition).

These manuscripts allow scholars to compare texts, trace variations, and reconstruct the most probable original wording of the biblical books.

Transmission

The preservation and transmission of the Bible is the historical and theological process by which original biblical writings (autographs) were copied, shared, and maintained through centuries and handwriting copy before the invention of the printing press. Unlike Jewish tradition, which preferred scrolls, early Christians pioneered the codex (book format), which allowed for easier navigation and the grouping of multiple books like the four Gospels.
