HOLY SPIRIT GUIDED INTERPRETATION?
"Hmmmm? Ilan kayang Holy Spirit ang gumagabay sa kanila? At magkaiba ang interpretasyon."(Hmmm? How many Holy Spirits taking guide to them and the interpretation have differences) - Sister Jonavy, Paathag Blog, from Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Capiz | December 31, 2021 - 12:58 AM

Claims regarding the Holy Spirit’s role in Bible interpretation center on illumination—the belief that the Spirit enables believers to discern and apply divine truth. However, research in theology and biblical criticism identifies several reasons why these claims often lead to interpretive errors.
Core Claims of Holy Spirit Guidance
Theological research distinguishes between "inspiration" (the Spirit's past, infallible work in writing Scripture) and "illumination" (His present, fallible help in understanding it). The Spirit is claimed to move beyond mere mental apprehension to "heart-understanding," persuading the reader of the truth and prompting obedience. Believers argue that certain "spiritual things" are only discerned through the Spirit, making a secular or purely rationalist approach insufficient for full understanding.
Research highlights that claiming the Spirit's guidance does not guarantee accuracy because human filters often distort the message. A common pitfall is the "lazy" expectation that the Spirit will impart meaning without the interpreter needing to study original languages, history, or context. Interpreters often mistake their own personal intuitions, cultural biases, or "visions" for Spirit-led insights. Scholarly research shows these subjective feelings frequently contradict the objective, written text. Errors arise when readers ignore the "strangeness" of the ancient text—such as metaphors or idioms in Hebrew and Greek—by projecting modern definitions onto biblical words. Some theological frameworks identify a "spirit of error" or "spirit of misinterpretation" as a force that actively sows discord through distorted communication.
Biblical criticism provides tools to verify or debunk claims of "Spirit-led" interpretation. To learn more you can read the previous apologetics article, "BIBLICAL HERMENEUTICS: CONTEXT FIRST, BEFORE INTERPRETATION."
