FRAMEWORK OF BIBLE STUDY AND JOURNALING
As a Christian, either Born Again Christian side -whether a Pentecostal, Evangelical, or Charismatic- or Catholic, recognize the methods of bible study and journaling had different methods
MPCWA Method
Bible journaling using the MPCWA (Message, Promise, Command, Warning, Application) method is a structured approach to devotional study. This method helps transition from passive reading to active engagement with Scripture. The MPCWA method is a widely recognized Bible study and journaling framework frequently used within Christian discipleship circles, particularly in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. While Joshua Adela is a prominent practitioner who frequently uses and shares the MPCWA Bible journaling method on his platforms, the method itself has been in use by others since at least 2013.
1. Preparation - Before starting, set aside a quiet space and a dedicated time to build a consistent habit. Begin by asking the Holy Spirit for guidance and an open heart to understand God’s Word. Choose a passage and read it thoroughly, often several times or in different translations, to grasp the full context.
2. Message - Identify the core truth or central theme of the passage. Ask, "What is God saying in this text?" or "What is the overall point being made?". For Example: "The Kingdom of God is already here through Jesus Christ".
3. Promise - Look for specific spiritual assurances or commitments God makes to His people in the text. These often relate to God's presence, provision, or character. For Example: "God will provide for your needs" or "God will never leave you".
4. Command - Identify instructions or moral directives given in the Scripture. Focus on what God is calling you to do or how He is asking you to live. For Example: "Do not be anxious about your life" or "Trust in the Lord with all your heart".
5. Warning - Note any cautions against sin, disobedience, or spiritual pitfalls mentioned in the passage. Warnings often serve as examples to help believers avoid repeating the mistakes of others. For Example: "Never worry, for it is a tool of the enemy" or "Avoid being fooled by false teachings".
6. Application - Determine how to put these truths into practice in your daily life. Make it personal, "How does this change my behavior, thoughts, or relationships today?". For Example: "Instead of worrying about my finances today, I will pause and pray, thanking God for what I already have".
SOAP Method
The SOAP method is a popular four-step Bible study technique developed by Pastor Wayne Cordeiro. It is designed to help readers engage with the Bible on a personal level and move beyond just "reading" to actively "living" God’s Word. The steps are:
S – Scripture: Choose a specific verse or short passage that stands out to you during your daily reading. It is highly recommended to write it out word-for-word in a journal. Physically writing the text helps you slow down and focus on every individual word.
O – Observation: Reflect on the text and write down what you notice. Consider the context by asking questions like: "Who is the audience?", "What words or themes are repeated?", and "What does this reveal about God’s character?".
A – Application: This is the most personal step. Ask yourself how this scripture applies to your current life situation. Are there commands to obey, promises to claim, or specific changes you need to make in your thoughts or actions?.
P – Prayer: Write a short prayer based on the scripture and your observations. Ask God for the strength to apply these truths to your life, and thank Him for the wisdom He revealed during your study.
It is easy to remember and requires no special theological training. It can be used for as little as 10–15 minutes or for an hour of deep study. It bridges the gap between head knowledge and heart transformation by requiring a practical response.
HEAR Method
The HEAR Bible Method is a simple four-step journaling approach designed to help readers engage deeply with Scripture and move beyond just "checking a box" on a reading plan. Developed by Pastor Robby Gallaty, this method focuses on active engagement with scripture to move beyond "box-checking" and toward personal transformation.
H – Highlight: After praying for guidance, read your selected passage and identify one or two verses that stand out to you. Write out the book name, passage, chapter/verse numbers, and create a unique title for the entry.
E – Explain: In your own words, describe what the text means in its original context. Ask questions like: Who was the original audience? Why was this written? How does it fit with the surrounding verses?.
A – Apply: Connect the ancient truth to your current life. Reflect on questions such as: What does this teach me about God? Is there an action to avoid or embrace? What is God saying to me personally today?.
R – Respond: Conclude by writing a personal response to what you have learned. This often takes the form of a prayer for strength to obey or a specific, measurable call to action you will take during the week.
Always begin by asking the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to "wondrous things" (Psalm 119:18).
APPLE Method
The APPLE Bible Study Method is a structured approach for reading and reflecting on Scripture, particularly popular for personal journaling. It uses an acronym to guide you through five specific areas of focus within a passage.
A – Attributes of God: Look for what the passage reveals about God’s character, nature, or names (e.g., He is loving, patient, or a provider).
P – Promises of God: Identify specific promises God makes to His people in the text, such as comfort, guidance, or eternal life.
P – Principles of Life: Extract practical guidelines or commandments for how to live, ethical choices, or spiritual truths that apply to daily life.
L – Lessons Learned: Reflect on the overall lesson of the text. This often includes identifying sins to avoid or areas where you need to grow.
E – Example to Follow: Find characters in the narrative who model godly behavior or serve as cautionary examples of what not to do.
Select a Passage: Choose a verse or short chapter.
Read Actively: Read the text through several times to understand the context.
Apply APPLE: Work through each letter of the acronym, jotting down notes for each point.
Pray and Respond: Conclude by asking for guidance on how to apply these specific insights to your life.
FIRE Method
The "FIRE Bible Method" typically refers to one of two distinct approaches: a specific four-step study technique developed by Dr. Ken Burge Sr.
F – Familiarity (or Fact): Read the passage multiple times to become well-acquainted with it. Identify the basic facts: what does the text actually say?
I – Interpretation (or Insight): Determine the intended meaning of the text. Ask what the main point is and what it meant to the original audience.
R – Relationship (or Response): Consider the passage within the context of the whole book and the entire Bible. Then, decide how to respond: how can you apply this to your personal life and church?
E – Employment (or Evaluation): Consider how God can employ you to do His will based on your new understanding. Evaluate your progress by writing down your specific actions within the next day or week.
TEXT Method
T - Talk to God: Before you begin reading, start with prayer. The goal is to ask God to open your heart and mind to what He wants to communicate through the passage and to reveal truth about Himself and humanity.
E - Encounter God and humanity: Read the chosen passage and reflect on two main questions: "What does this passage say about God?" and "What does it say about humanity?". A practical approach is to create two columns (one for "God" and one for "Humanity") and list the attributes or lessons you find for each.
X - eXamine your heart: Based on what you observed in the text, examine your own life and heart. Consider what needs to be confessed, added (e.g., a new habit or principle), taken away (e.g., a sin or negative behavior), or maintained as a follower of Jesus.
T - Talk to God and others: Conclude your study by talking to God again, offering thanks for the insights gained and praying for help to apply them. The final part is to share what you've learned with someone else to build community and deepen understanding.
Lectio Divina
Latin for "Divine Reading," is an ancient Christian practice of scriptural reading, meditation, and prayer. Rather than treating Scripture as a text to be analytically studied, this method approaches it as the living word of God to foster a personal, intimate encounter with the Divine. The practice was formalized in the 12th century by the Carthusian monk Guigo II as a "spiritual ladder" consisting of four distinct movements:
Lectio (Read): Read a short passage of Scripture slowly and repeatedly. Listen for a specific word or phrase that captures your attention.
Meditatio (Meditate): Reflect on that word or phrase. Ruminate on its meaning in your life, much like "chewing the cud".
Oratio (Pray): Respond to God in a personal dialogue. Talk to Him about what you discovered or felt during your meditation.
Contemplatio (Contemplate): Rest silently in God's presence. Move beyond words and simply be with the Lord.
Some modern guides add a fifth step, Actio (Action), which involves discerning a concrete change or deed to perform based on the prayer experience. The roots of Lectio Divina date back to the early Church (3rd–4th centuries), specifically to figures like St. Gregory of Nyssa. It was established as a standard practice by St. Benedict in the 6th century for his monks. Once limited to monasteries, it has been rediscovered by laypeople across various Christian denominations (Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, and Protestant) as a way to deepen spiritual life.
Ignatian Method
The "Ignatian Method" primarily refers to spiritual practices developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. It encompasses specific techniques for prayer, reflection, and decision-making designed to help individuals find "God in all things". The Core Prayer Methods are:
Ignatian Contemplation (Imaginative Prayer): A method where you place yourself within a Gospel scene using your imagination. You "compose the place" by visualizing the setting and using all five senses—seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching—to interact with Jesus and other characters as if you were present.
The Daily Examen: A prayerful review of your day to detect God’s presence. It typically follows five steps: Become aware of God's presence, Review the day with gratitude, Pay attention to your emotions, Choose one feature of the day to pray from, Look toward tomorrow with hope.
Colloquy: A direct, intimate conversation with God, Jesus, or a saint, spoken "as one friend speaks to another". This often concludes other forms of prayer.
The Ignatian method of discernment helps individuals make choices that align with God's will. Key principles include:
Interior Freedom (Indifference): Approaching a decision without being biased toward one option over another, seeking only what leads to God's service.
Consolation and Desolation: Paying attention to inner movements; "consolation" (peace, joy, hope) often indicates alignment with God, while "desolation" (darkness, anxiety) may signal a different path.
Practical Techniques: Weighing pros and cons, imagining advice you would give to a stranger, or reflecting on your choice from the perspective of your deathbed.
WORD Method
The WORD Method is a devotional Bible study technique designed to help readers engage deeply with Scripture through a simple four-step acronym.
W – Write: Choose a specific verse or short passage that stands out to you and write it out word-for-word in a journal. Writing helps you slow down and focus on every word.
O – Observe: Analyze the context. Ask investigative questions such as "Who is speaking?", "To whom?", "What is the primary message?", and "Why was this written?".
R – Relevant: Apply the passage to your own life. Ask yourself how this verse relates to your current situation, if there is a command to obey, or if God is asking you to change a specific behavior.
D – Declare: This final step involves speaking the truths or promises of the passage over your life through prayer. It is an act of verbalizing your commitment to believe or act upon what God has revealed.
POWER Method
The P.O.W.E.R. Bible study method is a five-step acronym designed to help individuals move beyond surface-level reading to a deeper, more intentional engagement with Scripture. It integrates personal reflection with a structured analytical framework.
P – Prayer: Begin by inviting the Holy Spirit to guide your understanding. Ask God what is on your heart and what He wants to reveal to you through the text.
O – Observe: Carefully read the passage, noting key themes, characters, and any details that stand out. Ask what the text reveals about God’s nature or yourself.
W – Write: Document the specific verses or phrases that resonate with you. Writing out scripture can aid in memorization and personal ownership of the message.
E – Envision (or Evaluate/Explain): Consider how to apply the principles in your daily life. Visualize the changes this scripture might foster or the actions God may be calling you to take.
R – Response: Conclude by turning your reflections back into prayer. Express gratitude for what you learned and ask for divine assistance in applying these truths.
Priscilla Shirer’s "5 Ps"
Priscilla Shirer’s "5 Ps" is a structured Bible study method designed to help individuals hear from God and apply His Word to their daily lives. The five steps of this method are:
Position yourself to hear from God. Create a dedicated space and time away from distractions to focus your heart on being eager and expectant to hear His voice.
Pour over the passage and paraphrase the major points. Meditate on a small portion of Scripture, such as one or two verses. Write it down in your own words to ensure you understand the core message.
Pull out the spiritual principles. Identify the universal truths or lessons God is teaching about Himself, His character, or human nature within the verses.
Pose the question. Convert the spiritual principles you identified into personally directed questions. For example, ask, "How does this principle apply to my current situation or attitude?".
Plan obedience and pin down the date. Determine a specific action you will take to obey what God has revealed and set a deadline for when you will do it.
REAP Method
The REAP method is a structured approach to Bible study designed to move readers beyond passive reading into deep reflection and personal application. It is often credited to David Platt and used widely by organizations like The Austin Stone.
Read: Select a passage—often a full chapter or section to maintain context—and read it slowly. Consider reading it in multiple translations to catch nuances.
Examine: Dig into the text's meaning. Ask questions like: What is the historical context? Who is the author and audience? What are the key themes or repeated words?.
Apply: Translate biblical truths into daily life. Reflect on what truths you need to believe, what sins you need to repent of, or what specific actions you can take today.
Pray: End by talking to God about what you have learned. Ask for the strength and guidance to live out the applications you identified.
Inductive Study
The inductive Bible study method is a systematic approach to reading Scripture that focuses on discovering truth firsthand by observing the text before drawing conclusions. It is commonly divided into three primary steps: Observation, Interpretation, and Application.
1: Observation (What does the text say?)
Ask the "5 Ws and an H": Identify the Who (author and audience), What (events or message), Where (location), When (timing), Why (purpose), and How (method).
Mark the Text: Use colored pencils or symbols to highlight repeated words, key themes, contrasts ("but"), and conclusions ("therefore").
Look for Lists: Note sequences of instructions or attributes (e.g., the fruit of the Spirit).
2. Interpretation (What does the text mean?)
Original Intent: Determine what the author meant for the original audience in their specific historical and cultural context.
Context: Use surrounding verses and the entire book to guide understanding; never take a verse in isolation.
Scripture Interprets Scripture: Consult cross-references to see how other parts of the Bible explain the current passage.
3. Application (How does it apply to my life?)
Identify Timeless Truths: Find universal principles that apply today, regardless of culture.
Personal Response: Ask if there is a sin to confess, a promise to claim, an attitude to change, or a command to obey.
Action Plan: Create specific, measurable steps to live out what you have learned.
Word Studies: Use tools like the Blue Letter Bible to look up original Greek or Hebrew meanings.
